The Adopt-a-Ball project that was launched in January this year has almost reached its goal. Local  businessman and organiser of the project Campbell Wescott says they have collected R30 000 of this year’s target of R300 000.

Wescott says this week he is canvassing all the local businesses through the Grahamstown Business Forum to set up a group of inter-company challenges whereby staff members who decide to donate money challenge other companies to match or challenge their contribution.

The purpose of the company challenges is to enable individual people to make a difference in the community, he says. The challenges are aimed at the individual level, not at the company level.

“We are not looking for company handouts,” he says. The campaign is in the process of being discussed with the business community in the whole of Grahamstown, making it a “multi-racial social project,” says Wescott.

He says Adopt-a-Ball has received support from most of the major players in town, including Makana Municipality, the Department of Sport, the Department of Education, the 2010 Soccer World Cup committee, Rhodes University and the Business Forum. “We have been pretty busy,” he added, with a laugh.
