Swallows Rugby Football Club will face Rhodes University Rugby club in an Eastern Province Rugby Union  (EPRU) sectional competition on Saturday.

The competition will be made up of two matches, with both taking place at the Rhodes Great Field. The first reserves play at 2.10pm, while the first teams will play at 3.30pm.

The sectional competition includes the Super League teams within the EPRU and will take place before and during breaks between the first and second rounds of the league fixtures.

The South Eastern Districts Rugby Union (Sedru) consists of two sections, Sedru 1 is made up of Swallows, Brumbies, Rhodes and Easterns (all Grahamstown rugby clubs), while Sedru 2 is made up of Winter Rose (Grahamstown),  Kowie United (Port Alfred), Rosebuds, St Marks (both from Alicedale) and Trying Stars from Alexandria.

Saturday’s match  was originally scheduled for 3 July. According to Phillip Oerson, Swallows rugby  secretary, Rhodes rugby club approached EPRU for the match to be brought forward as this date falls in the Rhodes holidays.

When Grocott’s Mail spoke to Rhodes sport administration staff, no-one knew of the rugby match, and no rugby club members were available to confirm the match.

Meanwhile, Swallows rugby practice sessions take place each Monday to Thursday from 6pm to 7.30pm and all players and prospective members are urged to attend practices.

Rhodes Rugby Club U21 team will host the NMMU U21 in an EPRU U21 league fixture at Rhodes Great field at 7pm tomorrow.
