Rhodes University is pleased with the general behaviour of the student body at the Carnival held last Friday night.
Last week, the Student Representative Council(SRC) said that the party was held as a test to determine whether students can behave at parties that are hosted by the university.
President of the SRC, Eric Ofei says, “Overall the party was very good, the students behaved and this party showed that we can hold events such as these without bad behaviour.”
The Dean of Students, Prof Vivian de Klerk says, “My impression was that it was a huge improvement on the Tri-Varsity party of last year and the security was much tighter.”
Ofei is also pleased with the extra security measures that were put in place such as the extra security guards and the police presence on the balcony of the Steve Biko Union. He admits that “the students were sometimes difficult for security to control and so the extra police presence helped and there were no major incidents.”
However, Ofei says that there was one incident where a student was pushing the security guards and was tazored as a result.
“This was completely wrong and unexpected so we are going to follow up on that,” Ofei says. “Now we are going to set up a meeting with the university to see if we can hold future events like these,” Ofei says, “it is important for students to be aware of the problems of holding these events and how important it is for them to behave.
”Ofei is delighted that the students’ behaviour was “much improved” compared to previous university parties. He says that the general impression from the student body was that the event was enjoyable.
