DB: First up, how did the name DJ Vuvu come about?
DV: (Chuckling) I really like to blow the vuvuzela, and so my listeners started calling me DJ Vuvu.
DB: When did you start at Radio Grahamstown and what shows have you done?
DB: First up, how did the name DJ Vuvu come about?
DV: (Chuckling) I really like to blow the vuvuzela, and so my listeners started calling me DJ Vuvu.
DB: When did you start at Radio Grahamstown and what shows have you done?
DV: I have been here since 2002. I started at the graveyard shift, but since then I’ve done almost everything. I have done talk shows, the party-time show in the evenings, sports, the mbhaqanga show (traditional music), the afternoon drive show and now the breakfast show.
DB: What do you enjoy about the breakfast show and radio in general?
DV: I like informing people about what’s happening, and helping to wake them up for the start of their day. I really like people andlove to communicate with listeners. They talk about the World Cup a lot. People are excited, but they don’t agree on how well Bafana Bafana are going to do.
DB: How old were you when you started and who taught you how to be a Radio DJ?
DV: I started when I was 16! DJ Luvo, a DJhere trained me.
DB: Do you do anything else other than radio?
DV: I DJ at Tsalanang, it’s a tavern off Elf street here in the township, on Fridays Saturdays and Sundays. I play house tracks. I love house! My favourite artists are Black Coffee and Oskido.
DB: Do you have someone you look up to?
DV: Yes. a Radio DJ at Umhlobo Wenene FM, Bra Mbu. He really knows how to interact with listeners and he is disciplined. You never hear anything bad about him. He is my hero. And he plays good music.
DB: Is there anything else you would like to add?
DV: I’m a DJ so if anyone wants to contact me about gigs or whatever, they can call me any time on my cell: 074 743 4972.
