Two Grahamstown residents were held at knifepoint last Friday morning outside Slipstream Sports Bar on New Street.
Tarqyn Human, a laboratory assistant at the Institute for Water Research, explained that he and his friend were on their way home at about 2.30am when the mugging took place.
“Four men came up behind us. One of them held a knife to my throat, and another one held a knife
to my friend’s throat,” he reported.
The muggers then demanded that Human give them his wallet and cellphone. After these were handed over, the muggers ran away.
Lauren Davidson, a Rhodes student who was with Human at the time, was walking a few steps ahead of him and did not see the four men approaching.
“I didn’t realise what was happening at first, but when I heard shouting behind me I turned around to see my friends being mugged.”
Human did not report the incident to the police. “Something very similar happened to me about two years ago, and when I called the police, they only arrived 40 minutes later, so I didn’t bother calling them this time.”
In response, Inspector Milanda Coetzer of the of Grahamstown police explained that people should report all crimes. “It is the only way we can ensure effective policing,” she said.
“Obviously we have to respond to crimes in order of priority, but people should not hesitate to report any crime.”
