280-odd children and many more Old Preppies will stroll along beside an old ox wagon, a fire engine, donkey cart floats, tractors and vintage vehicles to the traditional sounds of the Prep Marimba band and the College Pipe Band.
The Preppies have been collecting books and balls since last year and will donate these to various Grahamstown communities at the end of the Parade.
Prep’s doors opened as a day school in 1885 and a tradition and ethos that became the foundation of the school was born. In 1904 the Rev. Robert Mullins created the boarding school in Cradock Road and later Fairlawn. The school then faced and survived the most trying period in the world’s history with the First and Second World Wars, as well as the Great Depression.
In 1946 the St Andrew’s Preparatory Association of Old Boys took over. Along with four Headmasters, the Board of Governors have led Prep through the apartheid years and into the New South Africa, extending its facilities to create a modern school catering for pre-primary to Grade 7.
In 2004/5, Prep joined with St Andrew’s College and the Diocesan School for Girls to create the Family of Three Schools.
