Ironman 70.3 entries closes on an all time high

The 2010 Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa has officially closed entries with a record of 2 000 individual athletes and 77 teams registered to take on the challenge on 17 January.

The 2010 Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa has officially closed entries with a record of 2 000 individual athletes and 77 teams registered to take on the challenge on 17 January.

Ironman media contact, Gail Faiers, said “This is a massive 56% increase on last year’s registration stats.” Among those who have entered are over 20 athletes from Grahamstown who have been in full swing with their training.

The event consists of a 1.9km sea swim, 90km cycle and a 21.1km run.

Also on the starting line will be the 2009 champions South Africa’s Raynard Tissink and Lucie Zelenkovaof the Czech Republic. Both these athletes have spent the last year competing all over the world and are eager to keep their hands on the crown in Buffalo City.

The Grahamstown athletes are:
Kevin Barnard, Deon Boshoff, Douglas Cockcroft, Johan Conradie, Neil Currie, Richard Hall, Dave Hanton, Katjana Hoskin, Keith Hoskin, Janet Kelly, Mike Loewe, Kerry Longhurst, Kelly Marx, Candice Mullins, Stephen Penney, Terri-Lynn Penney, Kevin Rafferty, Andrew Roberts, Sean Swanepoel, Julie Truter, Julie Walker.
The Grahamstown athletes who took part in the Development Triathlon/Duathlon on 6 December are:
Olympic triathlon (1500 metre swim/40km cycle and 10km run):

Dave Hanton – 2:56:11, Candice Mullins – 3:15:40; Mike Loewe – 3:21:02.
Olympic duathlon (10km run/40km cycle/5km run):
Stephen Penney 2:46:09; Terri-Lynn Penney 2:46:09
Local results from the Hobie Beach triathlon on 22 November:
Sprint (750 metre swim/20km cycle and 5km run):
Natalie Ross – 1:24:04
Olympic:
Kevin Rafferty – 2:37:04; Kerry Longhurst – 2:37:35; Sean Swanepoel – 3:01:53; Keith Hoskin – 3:05:46; Candice Mullins – 3:06:33; Julie Truter – 3:14:46; Katjana Hoskin – 3:24:49; Mike Loewe – 3:41:31.
