The new Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) building at the Plum Tree Mall is not even finished and has already raised alarm bells.

The new Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) building at the Plum Tree Mall is not even finished and has already raised alarm bells.

The local Aesthetics Committee is up in arms about the large red and white KFC signs which are clearly visible from Allen Street.

Last week developer Rob Beer, received a complaint from the committee stating that the signs on the building are too big. The complaint was received within hours of the signage having been put up and the process was still continuing.

Beer said he would continue erecting the signage as “this is an international brand and it is a business site facing the road, its not offensive,” adding that if it was Colonel Graham then it could be called offensive, “but not Colonel Sanders”.

Beer’s other argument was that he understands the Aesthetics Committee protects old buildings “but this is a brand new building”.

Dominic Thorburn of the Aesthetics Committee said that no approval was given on the signs and it was not brought to the committee. “Its not just about a new or old building,” said Thorburn, adding that it’s in a sensitive and conservative area. “You can’t have a sign the size of a billboard,” said Thorburn, who feels that the corporates use their financial muscle to get their own way. “It’s outrageous,” he concluded.
