African Connections Soccer Club got off to a fairly good start to the season this weekend. The Absa women’s soccer league, Cacadu section kicked off over the weekend in Hankey, with most of the Cacadu teams scheduled to play up to three games each.
African Connections, who go into this season as defending champions after winning the 2008/2009 Absa women’s league Cacadu section, beat Alexandria Bay soccer club 1-0 in their first match, played on Saturday morning. Nosifondo Fabana scored the only goal of the match.
Their second match, scheduled to be played on Sunday morning, saw them win by walkover as their opponents from Bathurst, Red Stars, did not pitch up. In the afternoon, the team came up against Young Stars from Kirkwood, with the match ending in a 2-2 draw.
Fabana scored both the African Connections games and thus ended with all three goals for her side over the weekend’s fixtures.
African Connections are now lying second on the Cacadu league, a position they are not too familiar with, after dominating the last season.
However, African Connections coach, Chris Totobela said there is no need for his side to panic, as the league is still in the early stages.
Early league leaders are Everton who won two of there matches and also earned winning points for a walkover after one of their scheduled opponents did not pitch.
African Connections will face Everton in the next league match and Totobela said this is where they plan to take the lead.
The fixture has not yet been confirmed due to many players being involved with school exams. A new ruling in this seasons women’s league sees all teams having to field at least five U17 players at all time during a match.
