Africa’s premiere triathlon competition, the exhilarating 2009 BSG Energade Triathlon Series, moves to the Eastern Cape this month.
Most of the country’s top triathletes will line up at Pollock Beach in Port Elizabeth on 29 November for the sixth race in the series. The triathlon is made up of a 600m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run, and participants can enter either as individuals or as part of a team.
“Apart from the professionals the series more importantly offers intermediate triathletes and beginners all over the country an opportunity to broaden their sporting horizons by competing in this popular sprint triathlon competition,” says organiser Corné Grobler.
Many Grahamstown atheletes take part in the Energade triathlon with Victoria Primary School having been well represented at last year’s BSG Energade Kids Triathlon. A number of locals will also be taking part in the triathlon as part of their half-Ironman training.
Apart from the senior category, this year there is also a category for master male athletes (50 years and older) and, for the third consecutive year, a section for youngsters.
The youngsters will take part in the BSG Energade Kids Triathlon Series, which Grobler says has gone from strength to strength since its inception and is currently the only one of its kind in South Africa catering for children up to the age of 14.
There are two age categories with different distances in which children can compete. For the little ones there is a 50m swim, 1.5km cycle and 400m run and the older kids and teams can swim 70m, cycle 3km and run 600m which makes the races challenging but within each age group’s ability.
There will be sufficient lifeguards on duty during the swim leg and plenty of marshals and helpers on the run and cycle stages to assist the youngsters.

Late entries will also be accepted at Pollock Beach on race day from 6.30am with the kid’s race starting at 8am and the senior race at 9.30am. The final race of the series takes place at Noordwes University, Vanderbijlpark on 6 December.
