The ongoing hockey development programme, run by the Rhodes University Hockey Club members, saw the 2009 programme end in a tournament last week.

The hockey programme involves Grade 4 to 7 boys and girls from George Dickerson, Good Shepherd and Ntaba Maria and has been running since 2007. The programme was initiated by hockey club member Clive Eley.

This year’s programme began in the second term, with each school having a turn each week receiving coaching from the Rhodes Hockey Club members.

Kristy De Kock, organiser of the development tournament, said that a number of pupils were part of the development programme last year, while many had joined this year.

There were also a number of pupils playing the game for the first time. Last week’s tournament saw the boys and girls sides from the three schools coming up against each other in a mini tournament.

In one of the matches, the Good Shepherd boys came up against the girls side, with the boys winning 4-0.

George Dickerson boys beat the girls side 2-0 after the sides were deadlocked at 0-0 at halftime.

De Kock said that a boys and girls side will be picked from the sides taking part in the programme.

She also hoped that they would be able to organise a match for the boys and girls sides against Kingswood Junior School soon.
