    Busy athletics season for Kingswood

    Kingswood College athletes Faye Wienand, Natasha Jones, Luvuyo Swartbooi, David Kombe, Kago Monggae and Cirian Brown took part in the Cacadu district championships, with Wienand, Swartbooi and Kombe qualifying for the Eastern Cape championship.

    Kingswood College athletes Faye Wienand, Natasha Jones, Luvuyo Swartbooi, David Kombe, Kago Monggae and Cirian Brown took part in the Cacadu district championships, with Wienand, Swartbooi and Kombe qualifying for the Eastern Cape championship.

    Kingswood then hosted the Hirsch, SF Edwards and Sammy Gunn shields, being placed sixth in U14 (Sammy Gunn Shield) and fifth in both the U16 and U19 SF Edwards and Hirsch shields.  

    Some good performances by Kingswood pupils were:
    Bruce Duxbury U16 3000m gold and 1500m silver; John Stephenson U14 1500m silver and 800m bronze;
    Silver certificates went to: David Kombe for U16 high jump; Jethro Thorburn for U14 long jump;
    Bronze certificate went to: Dean Stephenson for U16 pole vault; Femi Orals U19 shot put; Luvuyo Swartbooi U19 discus; Lihleli Xoli U16 long jump; Kyle Illman U19 pole vault; Jason Davidson U16  javelin; Stephen Loock U19 400m.

    In the girls triangular, which Kingswood hosted, Kingswood finished second behind their main rivals DSG.

    In the boys quadrangular, hosted by Grey High School in Port Elizabeth, Kingswood finished third. Mark Turner threw 49.58m in the javelin and Femi Orals threw 12.50m for shotput.

    At the Kingswood athletics day, one record was broken while many personal bests were set. David Kombe broke the U16 high jump record.

    Chubb House finished in first place with 317 points, followed by Gane (298), Jagger (253.3) and Wood (210.5). The Victor/Victrix Ludorums were:
    U14 boys – the Williamson trophy – Jethro Thorburn; U14 girls – the St Aidens trophy – Shannon Arnold; U16 boys –  the victor ludorum trophy – David Kombe; U16 girls – the St Aidens trophy – Genieve Arnold; Open boys – the Cadet Corps shield – Stephen Loock; Open girls – victrix ludorum shield – Gill Fitzhenry.

    The most improved boy athlete who won the Bone trophy was Jason Slizuik and the Rudman trophy for the most improved girl athlete went to Megan Moss.

    The best performance award – the Mike Bandey trophy went to the day’s record breaker David Kombe, who cleared 1.86m to break the record of 16 years’ standing.

    The road relay saw four teams being entered for this competition, (two boys and two girls). The overall house positions were 1. Chubb, 2. Gane, 3. Jagger and 4. Wood.

    The best individual times were recorded by Faye Wienand and Bruce Duxbury (for girls and boys respectively).
