Rhodes University Dean of Students, Vivian de Klerk, has again threatened the future of the FNB Eastern Cape Inter-Varsity, after reports of “offensive and shocking incidents” this past weekend.

Rhodes University Dean of Students, Vivian de Klerk, has again threatened the future of the FNB Eastern Cape Inter-Varsity, after reports of “offensive and shocking incidents” this past weekend.

“While I am very mindful that there were many students who focused on the sporting activities of the weekend, and had some good fun as well, it is disappointing – indeed distressing – to see that the appalling and very visible and vocal behaviour of some of our students has most definitely brought into question the future of Inter-Varsity,” said de Klerk.
De Klerk said she received a number of complaints about the slogans written on students’ overalls at the event, which were worn on campus and in shopping malls.
“While one does not want to ban freedom of expression, surely we can all agree that this kind of violation of other people’s dignity is simply not acceptable,” said de Klerk.
NMMU were overall winners of the 2009 FNB Eastern Cape Inter-Varsity, with a total of 422 points accumulated over the 21 sporting codes. Rhodes finished second with 403 points, followed by University of Fort Hare with 214 points and Walter Sisulu with 184 points.
