The Antic Senior Citizens Service Centre in Albany Road is celebrating 20 years of service to the Grahamstown’s aged community.

The centre was started by Ettienne Mager and a group of Rhodes students in July 1989 with the belief that meaningful changes needed to be realized for senior citizens in Grahamstown.

The centre provides food and support to over 70 people; half of which are unable to attend the centre and rely on delivery of meals from the centre’s staff.

Mager hopes that "increased recruitment drives will result in more visitors to the centre, especially among the Xhosa speaking community". The week of celebrations from 27 to 31 July will begin with an Antic drum band march from the Recreation Hall to the New Apostolic Church.

Opening devotions will be given by Pastor Bennie Brown from the Assembly of God church and Mager will provide an overview of the centre’s history.

The rest of the week will include entertainment from the Correctional Services Department, the Antic Choir and a solo by Olive Frans. A service will also be held for the deceased throughout the 20 year history of the centre, followed by a certificate ceremony to honour long-standing members.

The Antic Senior Citizens Service Centre welcomes donations. Should anyone be interested in rendering assistance, contact Agerah Hopshire on 076 560 4858 or 046 636 1058.
