Makana councillors want officials to find money to fill posts that have not been budgeted for in response to vacancies in departments critical to local service delivery.

The municipality’s Infrastructural Services section alone has 39 vacancies. Only one can be filled.

Councillor Mxolisi Ntshiba asked why posts which are budgeted for had not been filled by the directorate.

Responding to his query, Technical and Infrastructural Services director Dabula Njilo said that while the posts appear in the municipality’s organisational structure, filling the posts was not budgeted for in the 2008/09 financial year.

The Roads department can fill only one out of its three vacancies for operators and urgently needs another six general workers. The patching department needs a driver and five general workers.

The preventative road maintenance department needs two drivers and 10 general workers, while the storm water drains maintenance department needs two drivers and nine general workers.

"We can’t allow the effects of the situation to continue unabated as this directorate is crucial when it comes to service delivery," said councillor Zamuxolo Peter.

Members of the council’s Land, Housing, Infrastructural development and Disaster management committee agreed that chairperson councillor Ntsikelelo Stamper and technical and infrastructural services director Dabula Njilo have done everything to find money to fill the close to 40 vacancies.
