Rhodes University ‘s Health Suite held a 12 hour Cycl-A-Thon for charity at the Rhodes Aerobics Studio on 22 August. “There was hardly an empty bike for the entire day, which is excellent,” said organiser Janet .

Seven participants completed the 12-hour challenge, each representing a charity of their choice. Nicola Craig, Ricci Pillay, Kim O’Hanlon, Jen Thorpe and Zama Gumede completed their first twelve hour cycle. Nicole Davy and Andrew Roberts completing Cycl-A-Thon for the second time.

Entertainment was provided courtesty of GADRA marimba band, DJ Simon Howell, fire poi, Tour de France DVDs and an projection of cyclist Andrew Roberts’ heart rate onto a screen.

“I was very impressed at the levels of participation, the enthusiasm and particularly the number of people who were there throughout the day,” said Kelly.

“Each year has had a different feel to it. This year I believe improved on previous years – largely thanks to excellent organisation by Jonno Davy and the Health Suite Staff who were all, in some way or another, involved in the day,” she said.

A mix of Rhodes students and staff, as well as community members and children took part.

A number of Rhodes departments, organisations and businesses hired bikes for the day including the law department, SAIAB, SAEON and DIFS, Grocott’s Mail, Round Table, the Rat and Parrot and Equilibrium.

Kelly said that while a charity has not yet been chosen “those people who cycled can rest assured their input will be taken very seriously. When it comes to contacting the lucky charity – I will ensure that a specific and valuable project is supported,” she added.
